Your Residence - More Important Information

Doors

When choosing doors for your new house or replacing existing doors think solid wood
or metal doors for every door that leads into your residence.

Many people spend big dollars on the front door and then go cheap on the side doors
and the door that leads from the garage to the house.  All this does is give criminals an
easy door to break down and gain entry to your residence.

Your local building centre or custom door manufacturer can be of great assistance to
you in choosing good safe doors that meet your budget.

Deadbolts - Strike Plates

When selecting a deadbolt for your residence ensure you use one that has a thumb
latch for the inside.  Deadbolts that uses keys on both sides are illegal and against the
fire code.  The last thing you want is for your children or yourself to have to find the
keys to the front door to get out in case of a fire.

When installing deadbolts make sure you use a strike plate to re-enforce the door and
the door frame.  Installing a deadbolt into a wooden frame is not very strong and can be
easily broken without re-enforcement.

Consult with your local fire department, bulding inspector or locksmith to ensure you
meet code.  If your installing or upgrading locks go to your local locksmiths, they are
the pro’s.

Windows

Close all the windows and drapes or blinds in your house when you leave and lock
them.  This will also help keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Criminals see a second storey window as easy entry.  Remember they may get in by
the window, but they will leave with your property by front, side or garage door.

Baby Monitor

If your going away on holidays or the weekend and you have a neighbour you trust, a
baby monitor can be a great way to have a neighbour keeps tabs on your home.

You simply put the transmitter in the house out of plain view and the receiver end you
give to the neighbour.  If anyone enters your home your neighbour can notify police and
be safe.

Test the monitor before you leave to ensure good reception.  Some neighbours even
split the cost of a baby monitor and help each other.
